1. Introduction
Dark Data, Dead Internet is a reader meant to explore the impact that data centers have on our world, focusing largely on American data centers. This 73 page reader uses a transcription of a special four-part series from
Tech Won't Save Us, assembled and discussed by Paris Marx. Inside two pieces have been formatted as well,
Federica Lucivero's
Big Data, Big Waste? and
Isabel O'Brien's article
Data center emissions probably up 662%.
Put together a year before big tech got it's hands on generative AI and the need to build data centers for it, it is most likely an outdated look on the topic. However the tech companies still aren't being transparent with how much power or water is used in the process of developing and maintaining these systems. One thing that has remained consistent is the fact that the internet grows larger by the day and faster than ever before. Just not due to humans creating new things, just thousands of generated articles and images that fill the cloud.
